Burragorang Lookout - Nattai

Client: Department of Envionrment & Climate Change, Parks & Wildlife Division (NPWS)
Project Category: Open Space and Recreation

Burragorang Lookout at Nattai is a picnic area with spectacular views of an incised river valley that was flooded in the 1950s for the Warragamba Dam.

Prior to flooding, the Burragorang Valley was home to a close knit community of farmers, and was also a mining resource (silver and coal), holiday destination, and a place of Aboriginal significance.

In November 2008, NPWS commissioned a design team led by Environmental Partnership to undertake the detailed design and construction documentation of the Burragorang Lookout Redevelopment.

Environmental Partnership had previously developed a masterplan for the site in 2001/02 and detailed design development plans in 2004.

The precinct upgrade recognises the lookouts role as a memorial for displaced Burragorang Valley residents and provides a wide range of interpretive opportunities.

Improvement works currently under construction and due for completion in August 2009 include:

  • New lookout with split level design, shelter, seating and disabled access
  • Interpretive sign shelters
  • Upgraded picnic areas with new gas barbecues and picnic tables
  • Entry sign to precinct
  • Carpark upgrade including turning circle and bus parking
  • Toilets upgrade
  • Disabled access walking track
